ECONOMY

The forest sector remains the stone base of the local economy. Numerous forest entrepreneurs have their offices inside the limits of our municipality. According to Statistics Canada, about 50 % of the working population of our municipality works in a sector related to the forestry development. The short-term resumption of the forest operations of the Tembec Company, will allow people of the industry in our municipality to glimpse at the future with optimism.

The will on behalf of the municipal authorities to get involved in the re-launching of the operations in the Commonwealth Plywood installations is of nature to advance the file. The elected representatives mentioned clearly their intention to see the operations resuming. If impossibility occurred at this level, they will investigate various scenarios to set up an infrastructure allowing the creation of small and medium-sized businesses under the “industrial incubator " model.

Numerous mining companies are also investigating the undergrounds of our region to find rare minerals and the preliminary results are very encouraging.

One of the major poles of development is the one of domiciliary construction. Attracted by the quality of its lakes and the beauty of the landscape, numerous new residents decide year after year to make of our municipality, their place of residence. New domiciliary projects are presently being studied as to maintain an offer of quality lots to the potential buyers.

The advantageous location of our municipality on the Quebec and Ontario border, nearness to; North Bay and Sudbury are assets of size. The bilingualism of the workers is another one. The unique fiscal possibilities from which benefits our region, at the provincial and federal level are a point to be considered at the time of location studies. Finally the healthy fiscal situation of our municipality allows us to offer taxation rates below the average.

The municipal authorities showed clearly their interest to diversify the local economy. It is necessary to go off existing tracks, mentions the mayor of the municipality. To help the elected representatives in their task, the Council proceeded to hire a development agent, who will serve as “communication relay” between the commercial, industrial sector and the various participants of the area.

This addition to the municipality will see to help the local and outside entrepreneurs, to advance their projects. These entrepreneurs can count on the dynamism and the openness of the Kipawa Municipal Council and its will to proceed from word to action.
